…while the other may scrap fourth plinth

LONDON. London’s new mayor, Boris Johnson, could abolish the fourth plinth project in Trafalgar Square. The plinth has been the site of a number of contemporary sculptures in recent years, including Marc Quinn’s of disabled artist Alison Lapper. Before his election, Mr Johnson signed a petition in favour of using the plinth for a permanent memorial to Battle of Britain veteran Air Chief Marshal Sir Keith Park.
The mayor’s new Director of Arts and Culture, Munira Mirza, has previously described Quinn’s sculpture as “preachy”. She told reporters from The Evening Standard that the Fourth plinth project would be “reviewed”.
Sir John Tusa, Chairman of the Governors of the University of the Arts, London, told The Art Newspaper: “I hope Boris doesn’t make a terrible early mistake in abolishing the fourth plinth, it has been a brilliant success.” A spokesman for the mayor said: “No decision has yet been taken.” William Oliver
