The Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the world’s finest museums, seeks an Assistant Curator who would have curatorial oversight of sculpture, ceramics, glass and metalwork primarily from Italy and Spain, ca. 1450-1700. S/he would have special responsibility for the European medals collection, ca. 1430-1900. This is a two year position through 6/30/15.
Primary Responsibilities and Duties
* Working with Met colleagues to ensure the proper care and conservation of the collections
* The research and publication (both digital and print) of the collections
* The compelling presentation of the collections to the Museum’s diverse audiences
* Helping to build the collections by working with collectors and by recommending acquisitions
* Playing a full part in the department-wide projects of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts (including exhibitions and publications)
* Answering correspondence relating to the collection and assisting the public and visiting scholars
* Interaction with potential sponsors
* Involvement in planning programming for the Friends Group and Visiting Committee; donor cultivation
* Fostering and maintaining good working relationships with colleagues from other institutions in the U.S. and abroad, with the scholarly community, dealers, collectors, and other individuals involved with the interests of the Museum
* Other related duties
Requirements and Qualifications
Experience and Skills
* Proven interest in the field – required
* Previous museum experience – desirable
* Demonstrated experience in accomplishing original research on objects from southern Europe in this period – required
* Strong computer skills – required
* Ability to maintain precise and careful records – required
* Strong interpersonal skills, particularly when working with donors and the public – required
* Ability to work closely with all staff within the Department and with colleagues throughout the Museum as well as in the academic community – required
Knowledge and Education
* PhD or equivalent in a relevant subject – required
* Fluency in Italian and Spanish - required; French and German – desirable
