After 12 years with Art Basel, Annette Schönholzer will leave the organisation this month, the Swiss fair announced today, 21 August. This is the second major departure from the Art Basel executive team this summer: Art Basel Asia director Magnus Renfrew announced in July that he will join Bonhams auction house as deputy chairman Asia and director of fine arts in September.
These two high-level resignations bring the Art Basel executive team to two, with Marc Spiegler, the Art Basel director, and Marco Fazzone, the director of resources and finance, remaining.
Annette Schönholzer joined Art Basel in 2002 as show manager, before being promoted to co-director with Spiegler in 2008. Last year, Schönholzer was appointed as the director of new initiatives, with Spiegler assuming sole directorship. Now, Schönholzer plans to “pursue other opportunities in the cultural sphere” but will act as a consultant for Basel in the coming months, according to a spokesman.
