British playwright to open London gallery

Cob Studios & Gallery will make money through sales and renting out project and studio spaces, with profits reinvested to support emerging artists
The new venture is the brainchild of young playwright Polly Stenham

London. The latest commercial space to open in London is the brainchild of a prominent UK theatre figure. The young playwright Polly Stenham, whose debut play “That Face” premiered at London’s Royal Court Theatre in 2007, is behind Cob Studios & Gallery, which launches tomorrow night 17 February in Camden. A project spokeswoman said: “Cob Studios & Gallery has been initially funded by Stenham. It operates as a commercial gallery, making money from the hire of the project and studio spaces within the venue, as well as sales from the gallery exhibitions. Cob aims to be self-financing with profits reinvested to enable it to continue to support emerging artists.”

The inaugural selling show in the 500 sq. ft gallery, “Unnatural Nature” (18-27 February) features works by Katie Paterson, Noemie Goudal, Dmitri Galitzine, James P. Graham and Anna Curtis. These include Graham's large-scale film, Iddu, 2007 (£15,000), Goudal's Les Amants (Jetée), 2009 (edition 4 of 7 at £7,500) and Paterson's Lightbulb to Simulate Moonlight, 2008, (£2,000), which emits the identical light—in terms of wavelength and amperage—of a full moon. The new venue reflects “the recent migration of art from the east to the north of the capital”, added the spokeswoman.
