There was no sign of Sotheby's contemporary Arab and Iranian sale this October, which previously took place in the same week as the Islamic art auctions. “We’re re-evaluating the timing of the London sale to best suit the needs of our clients,” says a spokesman for the auction house. The next sales in this category are due to take place in Doha and London in spring.
The news comes following disappointing sales at the auction house last October, which achieved £2.3m (est £2.5m-£3.5m). “When the global market was hit, this sector was hit hard, particularly the Iranian side, although it's beginning to steady,” says Michael Jeha, the managing director of Christie's Middle East. Christie's, Dubai held its Modern and contemporary Arab, Iranian and Turkish sale on the 23 and 24 October.
