French artist to create incandescent work for Louvre’s glass pyramid

Commission continues Paris museum’s commitment to contemporary art

Claude Lévêque will install a work underneath I.M. Pei’s Pyramid at the Louvre

The French artist Claude Lévêque is due to unveil a large-scale installation under the Louvre’s famous glass pyramid in April. “Drawing on the ancient symbolism [of the space], the work will incorporate triangular forms… and will blend in with the surrounding architecture and the structure of the Louvre Carrouse,” the underground shopping mall, a press statement says.

An exhibition of Lévêque’s works is scheduled to go on show in the museum’s Medieval art department next year. Meanwhile, “his intervention launches with an incandescent piece in I.M. Pei’s Pyramid”, the statement adds.

The move demonstrates that the Paris museum’s contemporary art programme is due to continue under the director, Jean-Luc Martinez, who was appointed last April.

Henri Loyrette, the former head, greenlit a monumental installation at the museum by Anselm Kiefer (2007) and a ceiling mural by Cy Twombly (2010). Other artists who have shown their work at the Louvre since 2003 include Anish Kapoor, Wim Delvoye and Giuseppe Penone.

Lévêque’s installation in the French Pavilion at the 2009 Venice Biennale, Le Grand Soir, comprised a series of disorienting stainless steel cages framed with lightbulbs. Billowing black silk flags were dotted around the space. “Light and sound can achieve complete metamorphosis. They are the essential elements of any sensation,” Lévêque says.

It looks really good. I love ephemeral installation in our Parisian monuments. It makes for great photo opportunities in places we have seen so many times as Parisian. But an opportunity for tourists alike, to take a picture in front of a monument which would look different than their friends pictures when the ephemeral installation was not there. Here is a link to see the picture of the installation: http://culturebox.francetvinfo.fr/sites/default/files/assets/images/2014/04/louvre-leveque-horiz.jpg
