Give the gift of art

During a recession, it’s always good to think outside of the box, and upstart art consultancy nAscent Art New York is doing just that with what they describe as “the world’s first art gift registry”. Launched at bridal event last month, the programme works like a normal gift registry, except instead of buying a butter dish or gravy boat, friends and family of the happy couple are invited to chip in to purchase works of art chosen by the newlyweds. nAscent Art represents some 50 emerging artists in New York and the enterprising organisation also offers a rotating art rental service and gift certificates.

While we at nAscent appreciate Nechama's enthusiasm for her employer, (see http://www.raandeskgallery.com/programEvents.php?programId=1), nAscent Art New York would like to clarify that we could find no art registry at the gallery website mentioned. nAscent Art's ArtWish(tm) provides an online solution for people to receive online contributions toward the purchase of items, just like online wedding gift registry in widespread use. The service mentioned above does not appear to do the same. Please do feel free to visit us at nascentartny.com to learn more about nAscent's Art New York's initiatives like ArtWish(tm).

This is great but they aren't the first. Raandesk Gallery at www.raandeskgallery.com has had an art registry for years! I've bought some great things on there for wedding gifts and they have a gift services consultation through ART2Gift!

This is a fabulous idea. And for artists, I think it's always a good idea to give your work. Prints, giclees, cards... reproductions are inexpensive, and gift giving is another way to get yourself out there.
