Guggenheim Asian artists survey travels to Hong Kong
Asia Society branch to host “No Country: Contemporary Art for South and Southeast Asia”, with plans to send the show to Singapore

Asia Society's Hong Kong branch is due to host the first display outside of the US of “No Country: Contemporary Art for South and Southeast Asia”, an exhibition originally mounted at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York from February to May this year.
The Hong Kong version—running from 30 October until 16 February 2014—features 18 works by 13 artists, installed in the Asia Society's space in the Admiralty business district. The show brings together works by artists from throughout the region, including Tuan Andrew Nguyen (Vietnam) Norberto Roldan (Philippines), Bani Abidi (Pakistan), Tang Da Wu (Singapore), Vandy Rattana (Cambodia), Vincent Leong (Malaysia) and Reza Afisina (Indonesia). “No Country” is also slated to travel to Singapore. In New York, pieces by 22 artists and collectives were on display at Guggenheim Museum.
“No Country” is the result of a two-year residency at the Guggenheim by the independent Singapore curator June Yap, and the show launched the museum's ambitious Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative. The multi-year programme, funded by the Swiss bank, aims to acquire art from Southeast Asia, South Asia, Latin America, North Africa and the Middle East for the American institution's collection.
The original inspiration for the show title is a line from a poem, “Sailing to Byzantium”, written by W.B. Yeats in 1928. The name also echoes the 2007 film “No Country for Old Men” by the Coen Brothers (based on the 2005 Cormac McCarthy novel).
Mexico's Pablo Leon de la Barra was recently appointed to curate and lead research into the Latin American edition of the Guggenheim UBS project, with an exhibition scheduled to open in New York in 2014. It will be followed by an initiative focusing on art from North Africa and the Middle East.
