Kabakovs’ monumental city opens in Paris

An installation by the Russian artists Ilya and Emilia Kabakov opens on Saturday

A massive installation by the Russian artists Ilya and Emilia Kabakov is due to open to the public at the Grand Palais in Paris on Saturday. “The Strange City” (until 22 June), which is composed of eight constructions with displays inside, is the latest in the Monumenta series of commissions. Artists including Anselm Kiefer, Richard Serra and Anish Kapoor have previously taken on the vast, glass-roofed space. The curator Jean-Hubert Martin, who has organised the Kabakovs’ display, describes the journey through the work as “a great, epic tale” that “addresses man’s aspirations and his quest for a hereafter… [and the] metaphysical.”
