For the first time, Anselm Kiefer has invited another artist to create a work for Barjac, his former silk factory in France. The fellow German artist Wolfgang Laib has created a yellow, tunnel-like structure within Kiefer’s Gesamtkunstwerk, which occupies 35 hectares of land. In exchange, Laib has invited Kiefer to create a work for his home in southern Germany.

The piece was unveiled to an audience of around 100 art-world luminaries a fortnight ago. Guests included Thaddaeus Ropac (2.0/B11); Laib and Kiefer are represented by the Salzburg- and Paris-based dealer, among other gallerists.

Meanwhile, Kiefer’s retrospective at London’s Royal Academy of Arts is due to open on 27 September (until 14 December).
