Letter to the editor—Peer review
Giles Waterfield’s review was a pleasure to read, and left a clear impression of the scope and contents of the book, its strengths and even its weaknesses.

As a reader for many years, I value highly the informative book reviews. It appears these vary enormously, sadly often including a few tinged with rancour (professional jealousy?), and others tripping over their own verbosity. Most are good and some excellent.
Please could you advise your reviewers to look to Giles Waterfield’s review of Jewellery in the Age of Queen Victoria: a Mirror of the World (July-August, p37) as a template? It was a pleasure to read, and left a clear impression of the scope and contents of the book, its strengths and even its weaknesses. Most importantly it left a clear picture of its place in the literature on the subject and the value it might have on my bookshelf.
