The Moroccan-born curator Abdellah Karroum has been appointed the director of Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha. Karroum, who takes the position in June, joins the museum after having been the associate curator for the 2012 Triennial at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris. His 20 years of experience include working as the associate curator for the biennials in Dakar (2006) and Gwangju (2008), and as the artistic director for the 2009 Marrakech Biennale. He also founded the independent art space L’appartement 22 in Rabat, Morocco, which hosts exhibitions and artist residencies.
“My plan for Mathaf includes international standards for conservation and exhibitions, scholarly research and publications, and the creation of a new strategic department led by Michelle Dezember, continuing the museum’s international programme and special projects,” said Karroun in a press statement.
Mathaf’s previous director, Wassan Al-Khudhairi who started at the museum as chief curator in 2007, stepped down in April last year to pursue a PhD. Dezember has served as interim director since then.
