LeRoy Neiman
The American painter LeRoy Neiman, who recorded major events such as the Super Bowl and Olympic Games on his brightly coloured canvases, died on Wednesday 20 June, aged 91. Neiman was a popular artist, comparable to Norman Rockwell and Andrew Wyeth, but his work never received critical praise. Nevertheless, he built a successful career through his paintings, drawings and limited edition prints, earning tens of millions of dollars annually. He lived as a bon vivant, wearing flashy suits and smoking Cuban cigars, and his work was regularly reproduced in Playboy magazine, thanks to an early friendship with Hugh Hefner.
