Pulse New York is on the move

Contemporary art fair moving to coincide with new Frieze New York edition

new york. Pulse contemporary art fair is moving to coincide with the debut of Frieze New York (3-6 May 2012), rather than take its usual slot alongside the Armory Show two months earlier (8-11 March 2012). Despite the apparent shift in allegiances, Pulse’s organisers deny that the decision was “based on an endorsement of either fair”, according to a press statement. “We wish [the Armory] all the best in their future endeavours and also want to extend a warm welcome to Frieze,” said Cornell DeWitt, the director of the satellite fair. Pulse has also announced the line-up for its inaugural Los Angeles fair (30 September-3 October 2011), which is due to take place as exhibitions open across greater Los Angeles as part of the Pacific Standard Time season. Pulse LA will feature around 65 galleries, including Schroeder Romero & Shredder from New York and Blythe Projects from Culver City. Street artist Mister Cartoon will create a special installation for the LA fair.

The move makes sense, and their explanation typically diplomatic. The reason the art fairs continue to proliferate is that property and community are increasingly moving in this direction. The shopkeepers participate or stagnate and the next step will be virtual attendance: Enter VIP Art Fair?
