At Christie’s on Wednesday, Chaim Soutine’s Le Petit Pâtissier, 1927, made a record for the artist, selling for $18m (est $16m-$21m) to a Japanese buyer. The work, once owned by the real-estate scion Sidney Brody, had not appeared on the market since 1977. It was guaranteed by a third party but received only one bid. The Impressionist and Modern sale made $159m. Sotheby’s made $230m the previous night.
