Rothko’s remains to be moved

NEW YORK. Mark Rothko’s remains are to be moved from a plot on Long Island, New York, to a Jewish cemetery in Westchester County, 38 years after the artist committed suicide. Last month, a state supreme court judge approved a petition from the artist’s daughter and son to exhume his body so that it can be reburied in Sharon Gardens in Kensico Cemetery in the town of Valhalla, alongside the remains of his estranged wife, which the heirs are also planning to disinter from a Cleveland cemetery. The proposed removal raised objections from residents who wanted the famous abstract expressionist’s remains to stay on Long Island, including the sister of artist Theodoros Stamos, an executor of Rothko’s will and the owner of the plot in which he was buried.
