Vatican: “We want our own pavilion at next Venice Biennale”

VENICE. Monsignor Gianfranco Ravasi, the recently-appointed President of the Pontifical Council for Culture, announced at a Vatican press conference last month that the state wants to take part in the 2009 Venice Biennale. The Vatican has been in talks with Venice mayor Massimo Cacciari and the Cini Foundation in Venice is now helping to locate a suitable building, most likely a deconsecrated church. The Vatican intends to commission new pieces for its national participation and says it hopes to work with artists who explore issues of spirituality in their work. Possible names include Anish Kapoor, Jannis Kounellis and Bill Viola. The state also hopes to take part in this year’s Architecture Biennale which opens on 14 September (until 23 November).
