Fairs Market Turkey

Video fair coming to Istanbul

Turkish edition could be a forerunner to other locations for Moving Image

Moving Image, the art fair dedicated to video art and experimental film, will launch an edition in Istanbul this autumn. It is scheduled to take place in the Kuleli Building of the Haliç Congress Center alongside the second edition of contemporary art fair ArtInternational (25-28 September).

The Istanbul event is the first in a series of possible new locations for the fair including Hong Kong, São Paolo, Berlin and Los Angeles, says its co-founder, the gallerist Edward Winkleman. He adds that the pace of growth largely depends on the success of this new Turkish edition.

Moving Image was founded in 2011 and has annual editions in New York and London. The fair was designed to allow for maximum flexibility for dealers, but at a low cost (a single-monitor presentation costs $3,000, while larger projects cost $5,500). Gallerists on tight travel budgets can opt to hand over all aspects of installation to the fair organisers, which makes Moving Image an easy and affordable way for dealers to explore new markets, Winkleman says.

The expansion to Istanbul will broaden the event’s international scope, says its co-founder Murat Orozobekov, who hopes to “connect more of the collectors, curators, and dealers supporting contemporary artists working in moving-image-based media.”
