You can buy it, but you can’t have it

The Academy of Fine Arts in Umea in northern Sweden wants to sell its Rembrandt painting The Conspiracy of the Batavians under Claudius Civilis, 1661, to raise funds for its activities. “We are willing to sell the work for SKr300m (E32m) under the condition that the buyer donates it to the National Museum where it has been on view for 140 years,” Olle Granath, the academy’s permanent secretary, told The Art Newspaper. “With the interest the amount will yield, we could arrange our own exhibitions, seminars and publications,” Mr Granath said.
