Paulette Gagnon leaves Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal

Paulette Gagnon has announced her resignation from the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal. The move comes as the board of trustees state their intention to restructure the museum “to reflect the business model which is being revisited in keeping with the global cultural and competitive environment”, according to a museum statement. Gagnon, who first joined the museum as the chief curator in 1992, became director in 2009. In the statement, the board thanks Gagnon for her efforts, and says the chair, Alexandre Taillefer, will lead a search committee to fill Gagnon’s position.

Steven Matijcio named curator at Cincinnati's Contemporary Arts Center

Steven Matijcio is the new curator of the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati. He joins the institution from the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, North Carolina, where he was also curator. A graduate of Bard College’s Center for Curatorial Studies, Matijcio has held positions at the Power Plant, Toronto, and the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, among other institutions. He takes his new position on 3 June.

Neil Barclay moves to the Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans

The Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans, has announced its new executive director. Neil Barclay, who is due to join the institution on 1 May, was a senior consultant at Arts Consulting Group, a firm that offers interim management, fundraising and recruiting services. Barclay previously served as the associate director of the Performing Arts Center at the University of Texas, Austin, and was the president and chief executive of the August Wilson Center, Pittsburgh.

Kate Haw appointed director of the Archives of American Art

Kate Haw has been named the director of the Archives of American Art. She joins the institution from the National Building Museum, Washington, DC, here she had been the vice president for development since 2011. Prior to that, Haw was the executive director for development and administration at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She begins her new job on 27 May.

Elysia Borowy-Reeder joins Detroit's Museum of Contemporary Art

The Museum of Contemporary Art, Detroit, has named Elysia Borowy-Reeder its director. She joins the institution from the Contemporary Art Museum in Raleigh, North Carolina, where she was the director since 2011. Borowy-Reeder had previously been the executive director of marketing, public relations and graphic design at the School of the Art institute of Chicago, where she worked from 2009 to 2011. She takes her new post in April.

Alex Beard to Royal Opera House

Alex Beard has been named the chief executive of the Royal Opera House, London. Beard is due to leave his post as the deputy director of Tate, which he has held since 2002. He started at Tate in 1994 as the finance director and is credited with developing the financial plan for Tate Modern and its forthcoming expansion. Beard, a lifelong music lover, has been on the board of the Glyndebourne opera house in Lewes since 1998. He is due to take his post in time for the opening of the 2013-14 season.

ICA, London, makes Katharine Stout head of programmes

The Institute of Contemporary Art, London, has appointed Katharine Stout as its head of programmes. Stout is currently the curator of contemporary art at Tate and the associate director of the Drawing Room. While at Tate, Stout organised several Turner Prize exhibitions as well as shows on Martin Creed, Eva Rothschild, and Patrick Keiller, among others. Her forthcoming book, Contemporary Drawings: 1960s to Now is due out this autumn. She takes her new position on 6 June.

CCA Wattis hires Anthony Huberman as director

The CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco has hired a new director, Anthony Huberman, the founding director of the Artist’s Institute, New York. He replaces Jens Hoffman, who left for the East Coast last year to become deputy director at the Jewish Museum, New York. Huberman opened the Artist’s Institute in 2010 as a project with Hunter College–CUNY, where he is a lecturer. Before that, he was the chief curator at the Contemporary Art Museum St Louis (2007-10), a curator at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2006-07) and at SculptureCenter, New York (2003-06), and a director of education and public programs at MoMA PS1, New York (1999-2003).

Kunsthaus Zurich hires two new curators

The Kunsthaus Zurich has named two new curators: Catherine Hug and Oliver Wick. Hug started as a curatorial assistant at the Kunsthaus Zurich ten years ago, then worked at Art Basel and in 2008 became the curator at the Kunsthalle Wien. She replaces the outgoing curator Bice Curiger, who organised the 2011 Venice Biennale and is due to retire this summer. Wick comes to Zurich from the Fondation Beyeler, Riehen, where he has been curator-at-large since 2003. He previously worked at the Swiss Institute for Art Research and the Kunstmuseum Basel.

David Anderson appointed director of Museums Association

David Anderson has been appointed the director of the UK’s Museums Association for a two year period beginning 1 April. Since 2010, he has been the director of the National Museum, Wales, and was previously an education officer at the Brighton Museums. The association counts more than 6,000 museums and galleries as its members, most of which are in the UK. Anderson was elected after running unopposed.

Cody Hartley named director of curatorial affairs at Georgia O’Keeffe Museum

Cody Hartley has been named the director of curatorial affairs at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, Santa Fe. Hartley was most recently the director of gifts of art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where he started as the assistant curator of American painting and worked on the installation of the museum’s Art of the Americas wing, which opened in 2010. Fittingly for his new Southwestern appointment, Hartley, earned his PhD at the University of California, Santa Barbara, with a dissertation on the museums of New Mexico. He takes up his new post on 29 April.
