The National Gallery is one of the world’s preeminent collections of old
master paintings. Much loved by the public in Britain and around the world,
it welcomes more than six million visitors a year, has a highly successful
exhibition programme, a bold acquisition policy and world renowned
scholarship. The Gallery faces challenges too – engaging with a changing
Britain, delivering a secure financial future, encouraging philanthropy,
harnessing technology and maximising its global reach.
Following the announcement that Dr Nicholas Penny is to retire, the Trustees
are seeking to appoint a Director who can build on the strengths and master
the challenges. The Director will be a passionate advocate for old masters
and their role in the modern world; an individual with an international
reputation for excellence in their field; someone with both the ability to lead
an international cultural institution and to communicate a compelling vision
of its future.
