Mel Bochner, the Minimalist?
In 1966, the artist Mel Bochner was a 26 year-old acolyte of Minimalism. That year, he wrote an essay on the movement hailing its demand for “a new critical vocabulary.” But the art historian Jeffrey Weiss says that looking at Bochner’s art through the Minimalist lens is often misleading. This week, viewers can decide for themselves with the opening of Mel Bochner: Strong Language at the Jewish Museum in New York.
