The 23rd of January is the 300th anniversary of the inauguration by Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, of the Meissen porcelain manufactory.
By June 1710, production was in full swing and and Meissen porcelain became “white gold”, one of the most coveted luxury articles collected by the European elite of the rococo.
To mark the occasion, this exhibition presents, for the first time to the public, around 280 Meissen porcelain items from an encyclopaedic collection assembled by an anonymous Rhineland couple.
This collection is presented in three parts: first, figure and figure groups, many of these being masterpieces by Johann Joachim Kaendler (1796-75), director and model-master of the manufactory from 1735 to 1755. The second section shows the so-called “Galanterien” or “Galanterie wares” (flirteries or flirt wares)—those ceramic accompaniments to the highly refined and codified conduct of men and women in polite society—perfume bottles, knife and sword handles, walking-stick tops, toothpicks, earrings, buttons, flowers, tobacco jars (shown here, around 1745), pocket watches, thimbles and snuff boxes.
Royal and noble diningware is the subject of the third part of the exhibition in which a representative range of table services are shown to demonstrate the variety of delicately painted subjects—including Chinese, Ottoman and European scenes, botanical and zoological illustrations, as well as portraits and historical subjects D.L.

This exhibition, the second in the “Russian Avant-Garde” project initiated by the Museum Ludwig in 2009, consists of the museum’s entire Kazimir Malevich collection, which is one of the largest in the world.
Comprising 60 works, including paintings, sculptures and graphic works, the show gives a detailed insight into the artistic development of the Russian-born 20th-century artist, from figurative work to abstraction and back to objectivity, says curator Katia Baudin.
The change in style in his later career has become a recent field of interest for art historians, and the show explores and analyses his abstract and objective work by juxtaposing early works with late ones.
The suprematism movement, conceived by Malevich and which focused entirely on geometric forms, plays an important role.
The context within which Malevich worked is suggested through the inclusion of works by fellow suprematists Nina Kogan and Nikolai Suetin. The artist’s technique is another focus of the show, notes Baudin.
Ultraviolet, infrared and X-ray examinations were carried out on two of his major suprematist works especially for the exhibition.
The findings of these investigations will shed light not only on the paintings’ histories, but their current state of preservation.
The complete findings of this research and the discoveries made will be published together with scholarly essays in an exhibition catalogue in April.
