Tate narrows the list of proposed architects for Bankside extension

Who will design the new Tate Gallery?

On 21 November the Tate Gallery announced its shortlist of six architects in the international competition to design the new Tate Gallery of Modern Art. Selected from a list of thirteen, the finalists will develop proposals for converting Bankside Power Station on the Thames. The finalists are David Chipperfield Architects (UK); Herzog & de Meuren (Switzerland); Office for Metropolitan Architecture (The Netherlands); Rafael Moneo (Spain); Renzo Piano Building Workshop (Italy) and Tadao Ando Architect & Associates (Japan), and their brief is to propose a plan to convert the power station to create at least 120,000 square feet of gallery space, scheduled to open in the year 2000. The competition, launched in July, is intended to select an architect for the scheme, not a final design. The Tate hopes to meet half the cost for the project from National Lottery funds, via the Millennium Commission.
