The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art announced the gift of 250 works of contemporary art from Northern California art collectors Kent and Vicki Logan. Mr Logan, a Bay Area businessman who made his fortune as a founder of San Francisco’s Montgomery Securities, has been on the museum’s accessions committee for several years. The donation is a fractional gift that allows the works of art to remain in the Logans’ possession for up to fifteen years, unless the museum requests them for exhibition. Seven small exhibitions drawn from the Logan gift are planned over the next decade. A comprehensive exhibition with scholarly catalogue is intended within five years. The most substantial donation of art SFMOMA has received in many years, the Logan gift will strengthen the museum’s holdings with major paintings by Americans such as Philip Guston, Leon Golub, Richard Diebenkorn and Willem de Kooning. Also significant are early and late works by Andy Warhol, including a 1964 “Double Jackie” and a 1963 “Untitled (silver electric chair)”, a series of 1976 “Skull” paintings and a 1986 “Self portrait.” The Logan donation also includes European and Japanese works, among them notable paintings by Gerhard Richter, Anselm Kiefer, Frank Auerbach and Richard Hamilton, and Richard Hamilton, photographs by Yasumasa Morimura and electronic pieces by Tatsuo Miyajima. Besides the collection, the Logans have also given $1.5 million to fund SFMOMA’s endowment and operating expenses.
