“Mirror images: women, Surrealism and self-representation” now on at Miami Art Museum

Confounding the male gaze until 29 November

This exhibition, examining the work of women artists that have been influenced by Surrealism, will end in Miami this month before travelling to the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco in January of 1999. Representations of women, by women, differ radically from images painted or controlled by the male gaze. Meret Oppenheim, Claude Cahun and Frida Kahlo all confound stereotypical notions of female beauty, influenced by the iconoclastic movement of Surrealism during the Thirties and Forties. This legacy has been continued by Bourgeois, Hesse and Kusama, all of whom will feature in the exhibition catalogue, which includes contributions from Whitney Chadwick and Dawn Ades.
