Currently in Chelsea are solo shows of two photographers—Sarah Jones and Dana Hoey (see p.3)—who were in a much-hyped exhibition curated by Gregory Crewdson a few years ago, “Another girl, another planet”, of rising-star women photographers’ pictures of women. Both are represented in “Women by women” (until 30 March) a gem of an exhibition at this small, elegant, living-room-like gallery. It comprises a range of photographs by 15 women, as diverse as Nikki S. Lee, Renee Cox, and Justine Kurland (another “Another girl” graduate). These are placed alongside immediate and influential predecessors, including Nan Goldin and Cindy Sherman, as well as more distant precursors like Diane Arbus. Included is Tina Modotti’s “Two sisters” (left) and a pre-1906 portrait of the delightfully narcissistic comtesse de Castiglione, subject of an exquisite exhibition at the Met two years ago.
