Gagosian grows London presence

New Davies Street gallery is added to the pile

Gagosian Gallery has opened a second London space, to complement the well-established Britannia Street venue. Gagosian also owns a space in Heddon Street, which was the firm’s first space in London when it opened in 2000. This is now closed and will not be used for exhibitions “in the foreseeable future” according to a gallery spokesman. The new gallery, with around 1,000 sq. ft of exhibition space, is in Davies Street and will host smaller shows intended to appeal to a West End clientele. The inaugural exhibition features eight states of Picasso’s print La Minotauromachie (1935, above); the first time that the works have been exhibited in the UK. Gagosian now has five gallery spaces worldwide—two in New York, one in Beverly Hills, two in London, and is due to open a new space in Rome in 2007.
