Tate Modern attracted around 5.3 million visitors last year, a new record, while attendance was down at other London museums as a result of the summer’s Olympic and Paralympic Games. The museum, which attracted 4.75 million people (twice the number originally anticipated) in 2000, its inaugural year, opened the Tanks performance and video art spaces this summer and staged popular Damien Hirst and Edvard Munch shows.
