Mexican collector plans to build university and museum in Miami

The Mexican property developer and collector Gina Diez Barroso, who founded Centro university for design and media in Mexico City in 2004, plans to build a second campus in Miami, including a private museum to exhibit her contemporary art and design collection. Diez Barroso is looking at two sites in Miami’s Wynwood District to build the new university, which is expected to cost around $40m and take two years to complete. The Miami campus will share the collection with the Mexico City university, which is also moving to a larger site that includes a 6,000 sq. m museum and sculpture garden. Diez Barroso says she is currently concentrating on emerging and mid-career Latin American and Asian artists, and is working with the Miami-based Rubell family to grow her collection. Mera Rubell and Diez Barroso are both taking part in a talk about female owners of private museums at Art15 art fair in London on 21 May.
