Dancers in the Dark

The legendary choreographer Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker returned to Sadler’s Wells on Friday night (22 May), but her new show left some of the London audience nonplussed. Partita 2, a duet performed with fellow choreographer Boris Charmatz, began with unaccompanied violinist Amandine Beyer playing Bach’s Partita No.2 in total darkness (punctuated only by the occasional hiss of a beer can and the blinding light of a phone). The black-clad dancers then proceeded to chuck the odd pirouette into a performance that resembled the bleep test. Reactions were mixed, with verdicts ranging from “wonderful” to “very bad”. Perhaps the best moment came in a brief encore, when De Keersmaeker’s expressive movements to Beyer’s music concluded with the dancer “catching” the final note and blowing it towards the audience like a kiss.
