Paintings by Francis Barlow, James Thornhill and William Hogarth, an ormolu chandelier, bed hangings, and silver by Paul Storr are among the objects saved from a fire that ravaged Clandon Park in Surrey on 29 April. Also saved was the Speaker’s Parlour, one of the finest rooms in the National Trust property, which was built for Lord Onslow in the 1720s. “It’s heartening that we were able to rescue more of the important items inside the house and we hope that there will be more good news when the salvage operation recommences,” says Jim Foy, the manager of the salvage operation. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
