A very British bash at the BM

"We should be toasting you with Lafite served in cocos-de-mer or Mouton in ostrich-egg standing cups," said Neil MacGregor, director of the British Museum, on 10 June in an affectionate speech thanking the banker and philanthropist Jacob Rothschild not only for financing the redisplay of the Waddesdon Bequest Wunderkammer at the BM, but also for having entrusted him with the directorship of the National Gallery nearly 30 years ago, when he had never had a museum post before. A British hug followed.
