Woody Allen popped into London's National Portrait Gallery (NPG) with his wife Soon-Yi Previn on Monday, 6 July, during a low-key, flying visit. The US film director has been in Spain, moonlighting in Madrid as the artistic director of Puccini’s comic opera Gianni Schicchi, the revival of which stars Placido Domingo (until 12 July). Allen found the NPG was back to business as usual, with no hint of the drama that beset the gallery the day before when masked campaigners, upset at the energy company BP’s longstanding support of the NPG, caused an upset of their own, reportedly staging a hoax art heist.
