After the party: Douglas and Tobias decamp to Ibiza

The Scottish artist Douglas Gordon and Tobias Rehberger of Germany have jetted to the Balearic island of Ibiza this summer, creating a series of joint sculptures, paintings and films for an exhibition at the Museu d’Art Contemporani d’Eivissa (After the After: Douglas Gordon and Tobias Rehberger, 30 July-4 October). The Spanish island is, of course, famous for its decadence and excess; the artists subsequently “examine the after-point that occurs when this ultimately comes to an end”, the organisers say. A section of film showing two men having sex is the centrepiece of the show. The top half was made by Rehberger, who created a tile painting depicting the men’s upper torsos. The bottom section consists of a film by Gordon showing the men’s intertwined legs. This piece, which can be seen both inside and on the exterior of the museum, is about “two heterosexual guys exploring their homosexuality”, Gordon says rather candidly. Both men have created portraits of each other and converted a billboard, using spray paint and illuminated letters, into an exhibition poster. Gordon says: “When you love somebody else’s work, you want to adapt it. Toby will remake my work in a better way and vice versa.”
