Anish and Antony to the rescue

Artists Anish Kapoor and Antony Gormley stride the world stage like arty colossuses—but can they end war in one of the most conflicted places on earth? This fascinating scenario is the subject of Anish and Antony Take Afghanistan, an exhibition by Scott King with illustrations by Will Henry on show at Herald Street-Golden Square gallery in London (until 12 December). King explains that “if the government or these artists believe they can save the post industrial north-east with the Angel of the North [Gormley] or Temenos [Kapoor] in Middlesbrough, then surely they can rescue or regenerate Afghanistan by the same process?” Kapoor and Gormley, “two giants of public art”, are commissioned by the United Nations in a last ditch attempt to solve the social, financial and political problems of Afghanistan. Do they save civilisation? “Erm no, they don't sadly,” King quips.
