François Pinault denies Paris museum plan

Reports say city’s mayor will help to find site

The luxury goods magnate François Pinault plans to open a new museum in Paris in 2017 and Mayor Anne Hidalgo has even drawn up a list of sites owned by the city to house the institution, according to the French newspaper La Croix. The French billionaire has denied the claims. Jean-Jacques Aillagon, his adviser, tells us that “even though François Pinault has been asked several times to open a museum for his collection in Paris, to run alongside his museums in Venice at the Palazzo Grassi and the Punta della Dogana, he has never taken up the offer”. Aillagon adds that none of the sites mentioned in the report, including the Espace Pierre Cardin, opposite the Grand Palais, “has been earmarked to house any potential museum”. A selection of works from Pinault’s collection, by artists such as Cindy Sherman and Maurizio Cattelan, is due to go on show at the Museum Folkwang in Essen, Germany, next year (Self-Portrait and Self-Invention, 7 October 2016-15 January 2017).
