Six undergraduates will receive grants

The British artist Gary Hume is funding student scholarships worth a total of £75,000 at his alma mater, the London art college Goldsmiths. Hume, who emerged as part of the Young British Artists generation in the late 1980s, alongside fellow students Damien Hirst and Sarah Lucas, says he “wanted to help lower the incredible burden” on young artists and their families. “The most important thing this money will [provide] is time… art takes so much time.” The grants will support six undergraduates from poorer backgrounds throughout the bachelor’s degree in fine art, with the first two students starting this academic year.
