The National Trust plans to rebuild Clandon Park, a Palladian country house in Surrey that was devastated by fire in April 2015. The rooms on the main floor will be restored to their original 1720s design, which is by the Venetian architect Giacomo Leoni. The upper floor, which had less original decoration, will be converted into modern spaces for exhibitions and events. Around one-fifth of the building’s contents were evacuated. Archaeologists are now sifting through the rubble to recover objects buried in the debris, and conservation work has begun on those that have been found. A competition will be launched shortly to select an architect for the restoration.
