More than 500 illegally exported artefacts were returned to Egypt in 2015, according to its ministry of antiquities. In April 2015, the US government repatriated around a dozen ancient works as part of a five-year investigation aptly called Operation Mummy’s Curse. These included limestone reliefs, wooden model boats and a Roman sarcophagus that is due to go on display at Cairo’s Grand Egyptian Museum, which is scheduled to open in 2018.
