Schnabel & Son in St. Moritz

It’s good to see that the budding contemporary art dealer and curator Vito Schnabel has turned to his father— the art world titan that is Julian—for his next show at his new Swiss gallery. Vito launched his new space—formerly veteran dealer Bruno Bischofberger’s gallery in St. Moritz—in December with works by the Swiss artist Urs Fischer. Later this month, the gallery is “pleased to present an exhibition of new work by Julian Schnabel”, proclaims a press release. Julian’s six Rose Paintings (14 February-8 March) consist of broken plates and wood, and are “covered with lush viridian, sap green, and black oil paint, pink rose madder, violet and white”.  The artist adds that he likes using plates very much as a material; but take note—in these rose paintings, “plates function in a very different way; submerged in paint, they become the shadows of leaves and flowers and lose their identity as they assume a new identity as nature”.
