Museums mobilise to give female artists their due

Can you name five female artists (go on, try)? The National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) in Washington, DC, is using this question as a jumping-off point for a social-media campaign that will run throughout March—Women’s History Month—with the aim of tackling gender inequality in the art world. The museum is encouraging other cultural organisations to join in by discussing topics such as works by women in their collections. So far, 37 US-based museums and cultural organisations—including New York’s Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and New Museum, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC—have signed up, as have the American Alliance of Museums and the Association of Art Museum Directors. Meanwhile, the NMWA, dubbed the “mothership”, plans to post artist trivia, statistics and library resources online.
