Queen of comedy Joan Rivers’ art collection heads to auction

For some Joan Rivers was the ultimate feminist, for others she wore the crown as the queen of comedy. It is fitting, then, that Christie’s announced today (8 March), on International Women’s Day, that nearly 300 items from Rivers’ New York penthouse will go on sale in Manhattan in June. Objects and works of art include a painting dating from 1915 by the French artist Edouard Vuillard (est $120,000-$180,000), a jewelled nephrite study of a Lily of the Valley leaf by Fabergé (est $200,000-$300,000) and an engraved Tiffany’s water bowl (est $500-$800) used by Rivers’ beloved Yorkshire terrier, Spike. Rivers, who died in 2014, aged 81, left her estate to her daughter, Melissa Rivers. “The sale offers a ‘through the keyhole’ experience for fans across the globe to see and buy items from my mother’s amazing Manhattan penthouse,” Melissa Rivers said in a statement. The live auction takes place on 22 June, with an online auction running from 16 to 23 June. A portion of the proceeds will go towards supporting God’s Love We Deliver and Guide Dogs For The Blind.
