The Italian art movement that was pushed aside (until now)

Sometimes, art movements are just too avant-garde for their own good. This seems to be the case with the high-minded, 1970s Pittura Analitica group which, until now, has been rather under the radar in the UK. Mazzoleni gallery in London has remedied the situation, with a comprehensive 21-piece exhibition dedicated to the minimalist art group (until 23 July). “These artists focused on the materiality of painting, championing everything from elastic bands to watercolours, paint rollers to weaving, cement to canvas. Their practices were united by a shared emphasis on the action of painting over the finished product,” a gallery statement says. Look out for particularly unconventional pieces such as Paolo Cotani’s Benda (1975) which incorporates bandages, and Enzo Cacciola’s impressive concrete on canvas, 11-05-1975 (1975).
