Uffizi gets digital

The museum plans to digitise its entire collection of Greek and Roman sculptures

The Uffizi in Florence is joining with Indiana University to 3D-scan its entire collection of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures. Researchers will digitise 1,250 works, from the Medici Venus to the Sleeping Ariadne, and reconstruct their original appearance, including polychrome decoration. The 3D images will be made available free online by 2020. The two institutions announced the project in May as part of a partnership that could lead to joint exhibitions and loan exchanges between the Uffizi and the university’s Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art in Bloomington. The Uffizi has also created a new digital media department and is planning to launch its first proper website by the end of 2016.
