The Mexican scholar, who replaces Maxwell Anderson, has worked closely with many major international institutions

The Dallas Museum of Art has announced that Agustín Arteaga, who was born in Mexico City, will serve as its next director. The move comes after Maxwell Anderson abruptly stepped down after almost four years as director last September; he returned to New York to serve as director of grant programmes at the New Cities Foundation (he has since become executive director).

Arteaga, who takes the reins 1 September, currently serves as director of the Museo Nacional de Arte in Mexico City where he has been in post since 2013. “Arteaga led the museum through a five-year strategic planning process that focused on developing new audiences, implementing new technologies, and ensuring financial stability for the institution,” says a statement.

Catherine Marcus Rose, the president of the museum’s board of trustees, also cited Arteaga’s success in building partnerships throughout his career with international institutions such as the Tate in London and the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. He has organised a wide range of exhibitions ranging from Modern art monographic presentations—on artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Diego Rivera—to French Impressionism survey shows.

Previously, Arteaga was executive director at the Museo de Arte de Ponce in Puerto Rico for nine years. From 2000 to 2002, he was the founding director of the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires Fundación Costantini in Argentina. He received a Masters (1999) and Phd (2006) from Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico in Mexico City.
