Will he show or won’t he? Anish Kapoor debates boycotting biennial

In Asia for the opening of his solo show at Seoul’s Kukje Gallery, Anish Kapoor showed his support for fellow artist Ai Weiwei, whose work was recently removed from the Yinchuan Biennial in northwestern China. Kapoor is also due to participate, but has been debating boycotting the biennial, which opens on 9 September. “It’s problematic,” Kapoor said. “To be honest, I’m wondering if I’m going to take part because I think censorship is not acceptable. I think we need to stand against it.” At the time of publication, Kapoor remained undecided, although his work had arrived at the Yinchuan MoCA and was nearly installed. The artist also toured Shanghai this weekend, including a heavily publicised visit to the Long Museum Shanghai, generating rumours that a show there is afoot.
