Madame Tussauds has announced the opening of a Yayoi Kusama “artistic themed zone” at its Hong Kong branch.
The display, which opens on 3 November, will incorporate the Japanese artist’s trademark polka dot designs and “invite visitors to experience the concept of self-obliteration”, according to the wax museum’s website.
The Kusama zone will be decorated with black dots on a yellow background. As visitors enter the area they will be greeted by an overhanging pumpkin, one of the artist’s favourite motifs, which has been made specially in Japan.
Parallel mirrors and “dramatic lighting effects” will create “a sense of infinite space” and recall Kusama’s hugely popular Infinity Rooms. A wax figure of the artist in a yellow dress with black dots and wearing a red wig will sit at the centre of the display.
“I hope everyone who passes through Madame Tussauds Hong Kong can fully embrace the positive energy evoked by the zone,” Kusama says in a statement.
Jenny You, the general manager of the Hong Kong attraction, says: “Kusama is arguably the most significant contemporary artist of our time. We are extremely honoured for the opportunity to collaborate with her in bringing her wax figure and creative work to [our museum].
“This uniquely artistic themed zone serves as witness to the transformation of our attraction’s image, which has transcended the common belief that you’ll only find wax figures at Madame Tussauds.”
