The ‘top 40’ contemporary art galleries in France, ranked by artists and peer recognition

Ahead of Fiac, our sister Le Journal des Arts has published its first ever list of the leading dealers in Paris

Our French sister paper Le Journal des Arts has published its first ranking of the top 40 contemporary art galleries in France. The sociologist and JDA contributor Alain Quemin developed a two-part methodology to rank the galleries, with data available in spring 2016. First, galleries were assessed based on 19 criteria of recognition by peers in the art world and the art market—including Marcel Duchamp prize-winning artists, participation in fairs and number of galleries in France and abroad—to select the top 40. Then, the roster of artists at each of these galleries was “scored”, using the average ranking of their top ten artists based on the website Artfacts.net. These two numbers were then averaged to come up with the final grade.

At the top of the pile is the international behemoth Larry Gagosian, who has galleries in eight cities worldwide, including Paris since 2010. He is closely followed by veteran Parisian dealer Thaddaeus Ropac, the long-time New York/Paris gallerists Marian Goodman and Galerie Lelong, and younger Paris-based dealers Chantal Crousel, Almine Rech, Emmanuel Perrotin, Daniel Templon and Kamel Mennour. The Italian gallery Continua rounds out the top 10.
