The Parisian art dealer Emmanuel Perrotin is adding to his burgeoning fleet of galleries with the opening of a gallery in Tokyo next spring. The 130 sq. m space, in the heart of the city’s Roppongi district, is being redesigned by the Hong Kong architect André Fu.
Having helped forge the successful careers of several Asian artists over the past 25 years, Perrotin has recently been expanding in the region, opening spaces in Hong Kong in 2012 and Seoul earlier this year. He met the Japanese pop artist Takashi Murakami in 1993, becoming the first gallery outside of Japan to represent him. Perrotin has gone on to represent major Asian artists including Aya Takano, Mr., Chen Fei, Chung Chang-Sup, Park Seo-Bo, Xu Zhen and Bharti Kher.
Perrotin is also moving to a new gallery in New York next spring—eight times the size of his current space on the Upper East Side. He first opened a gallery in Manhattan three years ago, sharing the former 1932 Bank of New York building with the Swiss-born art dealer, Dominique Lévy.
Since 1989, when he founded his first gallery in Paris, Perrotin has opened more than 15 spaces, according to his website. He now has four galleries in the Marais district of Paris, totalling around 2,000 sq. m.
